A look back at Computex 2011

The world’s second largest consumer electronics tradeshow kicked off last month in Taipei, highlighting some of the most exciting products in consumer technology, to date. During the five days of Computex 2011, a plethora of tablets, smartphones and other devices were showcased, including an Android tablet reference design from Freescale Semiconductor. The company demonstrated Quickoffice’s mobile Office viewer on its Android Board Support Package, showcasing the performance, design flexibility and capabilities of the Freescale Smart Application Blueprint for Rapid Engineering (SABRE) platform for tablets. This integration with Freescale is especially important to Quickoffice as we continue our expansion within the Android tablet market, reaching strategic deals with OEMs to proliferate our app on millions of devices worldwide.

Another key announcement from the show that caught our attention was the HP TouchPad, along with other similar tablets from Acer, Asus and Lenovo. Described by some as an ‘iPad killer’, the TouchPad[J1]  boasts a multi-tasking card display and two stereo speakers, and is rumored to become available in July. It wasn’t just PC makers that made a tablet splash at Computex. Chip manufacturers revealed their plans for chips that would provide more powerful and less battery-intensive tablets. AMD, for example, is reportedly developing a chip targeted specifically for the growing tablet market.

The encompassing market of tablet and chip manufacturers, as well as mobile app developers, is moving toward a trend that involves better, faster, thinner and smaller computing tablets. This trend was prevalent at Computex, and will only continue to expand and be the focal point of tradeshows moving forward.
