Smartphones define a new generation

We recently came across a hilarious TechCrunch graphic and article that examined society’s perceptions of the latest smartphone devices and what your phone potentially says about you. While mobile devices feature the same capabilities as they have had for several years, such as the ability to make calls and to text, the particular brand you choose to carry in your pocket may disclose more about who you are to the world than you think. This perceived mobile phone divide is creating a new generation of consumers, as shoppers now look to purchase a phone that makes them feel the coolest and/or part of a certain class in society. This is a decision that previous generations didn’t even consider. Plus, all of the thousands of apps that can now be purchased further differentiate your mobile experience and capabilities.

While the debate over the superiority of the iPhone vs. Android vs. Blackberry will undoubtedly continue for an unforeseen amount of time, the fact remains that each device will continue to attract a certain group of people. We no longer buy a device just based on its features, as there is now a certain level of status earned by purchasing the latest and greatest device on the market.

Do you agree with TechCrunch’s stereotypical cartoons and relate to them in any way?

I think the cartoon is hilarioous. Of course, if there weren't an element of truth to it, it wouldn't be so funny. And being a webOS fanboy, I can say that objectively. =)

The only thing lacking is: How do webOS users perceive themselves, and how are they perceived by others. Hmmm...How about a Harley riding rebel-type, only thing is that's the way we see ourselves, and how everyone else sees us.
