Cisco seems to think so. Cisco had a major announcement last week, wanting to ride the momentum of the tablet craze with its Cisco Cius (pronounced see-us). According to CEO John Chambers, the Android-based tablet is ‘designed to work with video, collaboration and all of the cloud services in a seamless way that’s controlled by an enterprise’. Given how much energy Cisco is putting behind collaboration and tablets, the Cius is a perfect merge of the company’s strategy and product development.
The device is expected out in the first quarter of 2011 and attempts to bring together Cisco’s passion for video (think Flip), collaboration and the network, into a portable package appropriate for the enterprise or educational market.
While the iPad has spurred a recent surge in this market, it’s really been the demand by both consumers and enterprises that will continue the momentum in the upcoming years. Combined with unique, powerful use cases (like collaboration, productivity and Voice over IP) and well-built devices with compelling hardware / software (like Android’s operating system and Intel’s Atom chip), tablets are proving they’re here to stay.
The question looms on exactly where they fit into the overall computing puzzle, but while we wait to see how it works out, the possibilities are multiplying.
