The mobile operating system ecosystem

In the wireless world, there are a variety of operating systems for developers, such as Quickoffice, to pursue. The list includes Android, Bada, BlackBerry, iOS, MeeGo, Symbian, and also, webOS. The last, webOS, is being more closely watched than ever, especially since HP bought Palm, which originally developed the elegant platform.

Jon Rubenstein, formerly CEO of Palm, now at HP, sought to heighten the buzz during a speech at Fortune's Brainstorm conference. Jon mentioned that the next iteration of the operating system, webOS 2.0, would be available later this year. This is exciting news and sparked increased attention in the blogosphere, as webOS is a technically sophisticated platform and this update will certainly inject new life into existing webOS devices, let alone the exciting new products HP is rumored to have planned.

At Quickoffice, we’re extremely excited to see this development and the increased focus webOS is deservedly obtaining. We’ve already seen increased competition driving innovation in the market, with Android’s Froyo, BlackBerry OS 6, iOS and now the potential of webOS 2.0. We’ve always maintained a mission that we’ll provide robust mobile applications for our users, across all the major mobile platforms, and this scope includes webOS. I think users, and the industry in general, watching webOS will be pleasantly surprised if they continue to watch Quickoffice and our continued leadership in the mobile space. With the increased focus on smartphones, tablets and MIDs, mobile professionals need solutions that help them remain productive when away from the office and it’s our aim to ensure that‘s possible, whatever device they have.

Tell us – are you excited about webOS developments? Is there any specific functionality you’d like to see in a Quickoffice suite for webOS?

I'm definitely excited to see what webOS will bring. I'm also very excited to see that QuickOffice plans to release such an important and sought after piece of software. I would love to QuickOffice utilize webOS's elegant multitasking, for eaxple having more than one document either spreadsheet, powerpoint, word, or combinations of them for easy moving between each and cross-utilization.

I would be happy just to be able to create and modify Office documents and spreadsheets that can be exchanged with my desktop apps.

I'm extremely excited to hear about Quickoffice development for WebOS!  Please let us know when we can expect the first offering?

Let me be the first (and certainly not the last!) to emphatically say YES, I am excited about webOS development from Quickoffice!  I think you'll be able to take advantage of the multi-card interface to have multiple documents up.

I'd like to see options for zooming both in page view (where zooming makes the text bigger but also requiring panning around) and in word-wrap mode (where zooming reformats the contents to fit at different font sizes.)  I'd even suggest that you implement this with either a gesture-hold-pinch or an alt-hold-pinch so we can easily do either without switching views or using a settings menu choice.

Also, the keyboard shortcut possibilities are endless!

Thanks!

WebOS Rulez...

It's great to see Quickoffice as excited about webOS as we in the webOS community have been. As I'm sure you already know, we're just as excited about the prospect of seeing Quickoffice on the platform. There are great things coming, and those developers like yourselves who have made an early commitment to webOS will find themselves well-rewarded, I think.

In addition to just having Quickoffice on webOS (which was great on my old E71), I'd love it if the webOS version could access (and edit and resave) documents in a SkyDrive, both my own, and those shared by friends.  That would be awesome.

I really hope to get document editing on my Pre ASAP!!!  Please hurry, you guys.

Excellent. I'm on a Palm Pre. This is something that has been sorely missing from webOS.

I'm planning on adding a tablet when they are available. I'd like to be able to close a document on one device, and open it back up to continue editing on the other device. I'd like there to be the option to store a local copy, so I can still access my documents and work on them when I do not have wireless service or WiFi.

Definitely excited about about QuickOffice coming to Webos 2.0 so that I make make a purchase! In terms of functionality, I would like to see almost all of the features of a full blown office suite available in the mobile suite. Well actually only the features that make sense for a mobile device... It definitely needs to easily and seamlessly edit microsoft word documents, excel, powerpoint, etc, however I would like to see it do more than just standard document editing or creation.

WebOS is a great operating system and with HP's scale available to Palm (now a subsidiary of HP), QuickOffice will most likely make a killing, especially since Dataviz are stuck in their old ways. QuickOffice would quickly become the only choice for  document editing/creation in webos until Dataviz and others realize the opportunity lost...

I am 100% excited about getting a great editing suite like QuickOffice for webOS! As a webOS user since it launched, I can see the full potential of this operating system. HP obviously felt similar, and will now increase the scope of the OS by leaps and bounds. As soon as you release a version of QuickOffice for webOS, I will snatch it right up. That's a promise.

Aside from MS Office compatibility, I really need OpenOffice.org formats and the ability to sync documents with Google Docs please.

Google Docs would be great, but SkyDrive is undoubtedly the future for most of us business users.  If you can only support one out of the gate, please support SkyDrive!

Thanks for the update on WebOS.  I use QuickOffice on the iPad, and it is fantastic software that eclipses Apple's own software in the document creating and editing space.   I can't wait for a similar product on my Palm phone, and, hopefully, Palm tablet.  I'm a Palm Pre user that will be definitely updating to the next HP WebOS "rumored" phone, and most likely the HP tablet that runs WebOS.  Having QuickOffice on such a WebOS tablet makes me much more likely to purchase it.  Thanks!

First of all, I'd like to say thank you for your plans to support this great platform. I am really looking forward to QuickOffice for WebOS. As for features, I think some sort of cloud syncing would be nice, maybe with Google Docs. Also, compatibility with as many document formats as possible; obviously Microsoft formats are a must but ODF would be great too.

This is great news; if you are first to market for WebOS, there are SO many of us that will jump on board, and I know that you will be VERY welcomed.

Important to me, beyond the basics are:

  • Portrait and Landscape viewing and editing
  • Search/find and replace
  • Pinch to zoom in all apps

I'm very excited about webOS developments. With HPs corporate channels, it's a great opportunity for QuickOffice to be on a growing platform with no competition from any "other" office suites!

While docs to go gives basic viewing functionality, having full editing capabilities would be useful at times. Working in spreadsheets to do aggregations could useful.

I'm looking forward to getting quick office on my palm pre...

I haven't used quick office before, but theres a few things i'd like:

1. Make a Ui for the pre, and don't just port the same exact ui from other phones. Every iphone app has a bar at the top, and one at the bottom, most webos apps only have one of those.  The pre's/pixi's screens are smaller than the iphones, but have gestures, and a virtual button next to the time on the top of the phone that can be used for settings.

2. Not sure if quick office supports this, but google docs sync would be appreciated.

Even if didn't have any of those, I'd still buy it. But those are things that I'd like.

Yes!!!  This is very exciting news and I am excited about upcoming webOS developments and products.  It is really great to see that QuickOffice will be a part of that.  I have been eagerly awaiting a document editing application for my Palm Pre since Day 1 and look forward to Palm's upcoming OS update and new form factors.

As far as suggestions, I hope QuickOffice has a reasonable licensing policy so the QuickOffice product can be used easily across multiple devices without breaking the bank.  I also would love to see compatibility with ODF format files.

Thanks!

Say what?  Yes, yes and YES, we would love to see Quickoffice on webOS!  Please make sure it is not merely a port and does follow the look and feel of webOS; since consistency is really what drives an interface to be easier to use.

Thanks for realizing the sophistication of webOS, I am looking forward to buying your app.

Great to hear!

Regarding functionality request... since google docs does not currently work on webOS, or even if it did it wouldn't be stored locally, it would be great if QuickOffice would be able to edit and locally sync with either MS Office files, OpenOffice files, and GoogleDoc files.
