Ultrabooks: Evolving the laptop

One of the industry’s newest computing devices is the ‘Ultrabook’. Designed to evolve the laptop, these devices are thin, light notebooks that take computing to a newer, different level and have been said to revolutionize the traditional PC industry. Several companies have recently launched Ultrabooks, including Acer, Lenovo, Toshiba and Intel.

Asus, for example, is targeting the high-end market for Ultrabooks, launching up to seven models ranging from $799 to $1999 in price. Intel set aside a $300 million Ultrabook fund, focusing its investment on components and ingredients for the devices. Lenovo also just launched an Ultrabook called the IdeaPad U300s, which is described as ‘stylish’ and extremely thin, and has already drawn a good amount of attention.

In looking at recent industry discussions, many of these manufacturers are being careful not to put all their eggs in one basket and distribute too many of these products at once. Concerns of low demand and initial consumer acceptance are likely holding them back for now.

In looking at today’s market and from our experience in witnessing and being part of the various ups and downs in the mobile computing industry, we think there is a place for Ultrabooks in today’s mobile world. While consumers’ initial instinct will likely be to purchase the safer, more traditional laptop, Ultrabooks offer something new and exciting, and their smaller and lighter size also draws appeal. While the devices are likely to also see competition from the tablet space, we think the innovation of tablet computing devices, coupled with products like the Ultrabooks, could lead the way for the next mobile movement.

What do you think of the new devices? How do you see them fitting into today’s mobile computing market?
