What's on the horizon for mobile tech?

Last year was a big year for mobility. Actually, it was huge! Tablets and e-readers became widely adopted throughout the globe. The tablet, in particular, was heavily integrated into our daily lives, adopted by consumers and the enterprise alike. The number of people using mobile devices drastically climbed with app developers seeing increased demand.

We expect this to continue to skyrocket, but here are a few other exciting things predicted that will take place in 2012:

Increased Android fragmentation – It has been debated ever since the increase in popularity of the Android platform: Is fragmentation positive or negative for the end user? I believe it is both. According to Mashable, one major plus, at least for developers, is that Android has dedicated markets for specific devices, such as the Kindle Fire. We’ve seen tremendous success with our Kindle Fire app and other customized Andriod apps. Of course, there are always drawbacks to everything, and fragmentation means not all apps are compatible with your specific device. Whether you like it or not, fragmentation is likely going to increase with the growing number of devices entering the market and it will be interesting to see how Ice Cream Sandwich impacts this trend.

Mobile politics – It’s only natural that as people spend more time on mobile devices, combined with increasing popularity of social media, political candidates will start taking advantage of this new medium to gain votes. Computerworld recently predicted mobile technologies will play a major role in gaining votes during the primaries and general presidential election. Expect to see customized apps created by news organizations and campaigns, as elections heat up later in the year.

Widespread adoption and popularity of the Ultrabook – I can’t open a tech blog or newspaper without hearing about the latest and thinnest high-tech ultrabook. I blogged about the trend a few months ago, looking at ultrabooks as possibly the next big thing in mobile, but with all the recent buzz, my doubts have evaporated. According to Computerwold, pretty much every major PC company debuted a new ultrabook at CES. Another score for the advancement of mobile productivity technology!
