The iPhone can do what?

If you’re an iPhone owner, you are probably a loyal, or some would say die hard, user of the popular touchscreen device. As a recent New York Times article pointed out, there are a myriad of things you can do to take your iPhone to the next level, both with hidden tricks and also useful applications.

I asked friends and co-workers for their thoughts on useful apps and which hidden tips are most useful. Below are a few responses I found interesting...

Free vs. premium apps: Mobile app pricing

Mobile applications continue to proliferate, as interesting functionality and utility continue to emerge within these small, lightweight and easy-to-install software. As we’ve often heard, there seems to be an app for everything. You may say we are partial, but applications seem to enjoy a growing level of importance nowadays due to the functionality they bring to smartphones, tablets, laptops and PCs. Without apps, many question the utility of tablets as being more than just an oversized feature phone. And now, more OEMs are looking to leverage this trend and embed various apps to further differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

As a developer, we are keenly interested in this ongoing commentary in the community. One such topic that continues to arise is the debate around app pricing models...

Mobile app store revenue grows

According to IHS iSuppli, revenue from mobile app stores is expected to reach $3.8 billion by the end of the year and a staggering $8.3 billion by 2014. Just comparing 2010 to 2011, iSuppli is predicting a 77.7% growth. The sheer numbers speak volumes without further explanation. But, that wouldn’t make for an interesting blog entry.

iSuppli took a slightly different approach and analysis, including in-app purchases in its estimates, which they say will be a key driver for revenue growth until 2014. This sentiment makes me think about the explosion of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), which is witnessing broader acceptance and adoption in the enterprise technology industry...

Happy Belated Birthday iPad!

In the midst of the buzz and bustle of Macworld a few weeks ago, the iPad quietly turned one year old to little fanfare. To celebrate, Mashable posted an interesting infographic on the device’s development, which speaks volumes. iPad not only surpassed analyst predictions, but literally blew them away at five times more than originally estimated, selling 14.8 million iPads in 2010.

This gave us the idea to take a look back at our year of development on the iPad...

Smartphones define a new generation

We recently came across a hilarious TechCrunch graphic and article that examined society’s perceptions of the latest smartphone devices and what your phone potentially says about you. While mobile devices feature the same capabilities as they have had for several years, such as the ability to make calls and to text, the particular brand you choose to carry in your pocket may disclose more about who you are to the world than you think. This perceived mobile phone divide is creating a new generation of consumers, as shoppers now look to purchase a phone that makes them feel the coolest and/or part of a certain class in society. This is a decision that previous generations didn’t even consider. Plus, all of the thousands of apps that can now be purchased further differentiate your mobile experience and capabilities...

Is the mobile front slowing down?

Last week, The Wall Street Journal hosted its first All Things Digital: Dive into Mobile event. And, while there was not a lot of ‘news’ revealed at the conference, we enjoyed hearing the latest thoughts from Jon Rubenstein, head of HP’s Palm unit. Among the new areas that HP will be focusing on in 2011 are the tablet market and the ongoing evolution of webOS 2.0, just some of the reasons behind HP’s purchase of Palm. Interested in a glimpse of the discussion? Check out some of our favorite parts of Ina Fried’s Mobilized interview below:
